Looking in the mirror and seeing a bump on your gums can be an alarming experience. No doubt, one of the first things you would want to know is what could be going on to cause this abnormal symptom!
An oral lump could point to many different health issues – some of them relatively benign, and some of them more serious. #1. Canker Sore
Canker sores are fairly common and are usually harmless (though often uncomfortable). They might look like a white or yellow spot with a red border, or a simple raised area of tissue. #2. Fibroma
A fibroma is a noncancerous tumor that can develop almost anywhere on the body, including your gumline. They’re made of “fibrous” connective tissue, hence the name, and are more likely to form as a result of chafing caused by dentures and other oral appliances. Similar to canker sores, fibromas don’t normally require medical intervention and will fade as chafing lessens.
#3. Abscess
An abscess is one of the more serious potential causes of a bump on your gums. These fluid-filled sacks bubble up in cases of severe infection and can be very painful. They might feel soft and warm to the touch, but it’s important that you do not attempt to pop one yourself. Doing so could spread harmful bacteria throughout your mouth and worsen the situation.

#4. Oral Cancer
Oral cancer lumps are particularly difficult for patients to identify on their own because they can look and feel very similar to canker sores and fibromas. Key symptoms to watch out for are bleeding, loose teeth, pain while eating, and difficulties swallowing.
The best way to find out whether an oral bump is cancerous is to consult with your periodontist. If they find reason to be more concerned about the bump, they can help you arrange for a biopsy and other next steps for any necessary treatment.
