For Dr. Bita Farhoumand, dentistry is more than a profession—it is a family legacy spanning three generations, three continents, and nearly a century of dedication to patient care, innovation, and excellence.

A LEGACY THAT BEGAN IN IRAN

Dr. Farhoumand's grandfather was a pioneer in dentistry, graduating as part of the inaugural class of Iran’s first dental school at the University of Tehran. He established a thriving dental practice in Iran before embarking on an extraordinary journey that would take him to East Africa.

He first settled in Asmara, Eritrea, and later moved to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he established highly successful dental practices and earned a reputation as one of the region's most respected dentists.

But his legacy extended far beyond his clinical accomplishments.

At a time when racial segregation and discrimination were deeply entrenched, he took a principled stand against unequal treatment. He welcomed patients of every race and background into his practice and refused to establish separate waiting rooms, despite the prevailing social attitudes of the time. To him, every patient deserved the same dignity, respect, and quality of care.

His reputation for exceptional dentistry eventually led him to serve as the personal dentist to Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia and the imperial family—a remarkable distinction that reflected the trust and esteem he had earned throughout his career.

The Next Generation: A Tradition of Excellence and Innovation

Following in his father’s footsteps, Dr. Farhoumand’s father carried the family’s dental legacy to the United States, where he established a highly successful practice in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.

Having grown up in Ethiopia and attended Italian schools, he developed a deep connection to the Italian community. His multilingual and multicultural background helped him establish longstanding relationships with members of the Italian Embassy in Washington, D.C., where he became widely known for providing dental care to embassy officials, diplomats, and other distinguished patients.

Like his father, he built his reputation on clinical excellence, trust, and an unwavering commitment to his patients. But he also distinguished himself as an early adopter of groundbreaking dental technology.

He was among the pioneers of digital dental radiography, introducing the technology into his practice at a time when conventional film X-rays were still the standard. His adoption of this revolutionary technology was so noteworthy that it attracted television news coverage.

He was also among the earliest dentists in his region to incorporate CEREC technology, allowing patients to receive custom-designed, precisely fabricated dental crowns in a single appointment—years before same-day dentistry became widely available.

After more than 40 years of practicing dentistry, he retired, leaving behind a thriving practice that continues to serve patients today.

THE THIRD GENERATION: CONTINUING THE FAMILY LEGACY

Dr. Bita Farhoumand proudly represents the third generation of this remarkable dental family.

Before establishing her own professional path, she spent nearly a decade working alongside her father in his Washington, D.C.-area practice, where she helped develop and expand its periodontal department. During those years, she gained invaluable experience not only in advanced periodontal treatment but also in the importance of building lasting patient relationships and maintaining the highest standards of care.

Today, as a specialist in periodontics and dental implant surgery, Dr. Farhoumand carries forward the values instilled by the generations before her: a commitment to clinical excellence, a passion for innovation, and the belief that every patient deserves compassionate, individualized care.

From her grandfather’s pioneering work in Iran and Ethiopia, to her father’s technological advancements in American dentistry, to her own dedication to modern periodontal and implant treatment, Dr. Farhoumand’s career is the continuation of a family tradition built on skill, integrity, and a genuine passion for helping others.
